Ask HN: I'm hiring my first employee – literature recommendations?

Ask HN: I'm hiring my first employee – literature recommendations?

I run a small business that is scaling and I'm about to hire my first employee to help me with copywriting and content creation. The plan is to start with a part-time employee in order to both get some experience in being an employer and also to try the employee out. I will therefore hire a student within the field that wants to make some extra cash. I have two questions for you: (1) Does anyone have any experience in this that they want to share? (2) Are there any recommended literature out there that I really should read being new to this?

I've recently started working on an open source python web framework having come from the frontend and previously other envs. I've fallen into the bowels of complex codebases that are hard to debug before, but this is a whole notha level of dependancy hell amonst other issues. Do you have any horror stories of working for days or weeks just trying to get to a stable state of being able to write code productively? Terrible onboarding stories? I know you're our there.

Why are vanilla AOSP Android ROMs not popular?

Why are vanilla AOSP Android ROMs not popular?
3 by nextos | 0 comments on Hacker News.
I'm a bit concerned with data collection by FANG companies, and thus still using a Nokia N9 and a Jolla Phone that run Meego and Sailfish, respectively. They are beautiful but dead platforms, so increasingly difficult to employ as daily drivers. Android has matured a lot and is a quite nice platform these days. Plus, there's a wealth of good quality open software in F-Droid to replace GApps. Till Linux touch-oriented userlands mature a bit with hardware like Librem, if that option ever becomes a reality, a de-Googled Android ROM is probably the only practical choice if you want an open platform without Google. While I like LineageOS, departure from upstream and lack of reproducibility building ROMs makes me a bit nervous. Since vanilla Android (AOSP) plus F-Droid is pretty nice to use, why is it not popular? That's even the option that Tor Project recommends: https://ift.tt/2G9sZLN CopperheadOS was amongst the only ROMs that followed AOSP pretty closely, plus additional mitigations. Since COS recently imploded, there's not much else to choose from. But even self-compiling said ROMs is not too difficult for manufacturers that release tidy device trees and good documents, such as Google or Sony: https://ift.tt/2Nnygmj

Ask HN: Is it possible to get pigeonholed to certain company sizes/cultures?

I've seen people speculate if they've been pigeonholed in their career, in terms of being stuck with certain technlogy stacks, or tools, or a type of industry. I wonder about something else, if you can get pigeonholed to a limited set of company sizes and cultures. I feel like I'm pigeonholed with only being able to be hired by very small companies. Fewer than 20 employees small. No fortune 500's, not even any full-time benefits or 401(k). They're very unstable too. I usually lose my job before I could get another one lined up. I had roughly $8000 in my bank account when I graduated and today, ten years later I have only about $400. I want out of companies that I want to ask am I pigeonholed? Because I cast a wide net with job applications, going to larger companies. Even some major ones like Amazon, Cloudflare and Coinbase have phone interviewed me. But they don't want to hire me. Like maybe these smaller companies are giving me a stigma. Am I stuck in the small company loop forever? Unless I make some major lifestyle change like getting a master's degree or completely changing my personality it seems to be the case. So what do you think about this sort of pigeonholing? Have you been pigeonholed in a similar sense whether stuck with large companies, small companies or anywhere in between?

Often when learning a new programming language I am be interested in getting an expert review on a non-trivial project. I looked at using code review stack exchange but it seems to only be used for small snippets of code. Happy to pay for a review as I recognize reviewing a whole project by an expert is unlikely to be free. Anyone know of sites which do this?

Ask HN: Moving back into tech industry from consulting

Ask HN: Moving back into tech industry from consulting
2 by hestefisk | 0 comments on Hacker News.
Dear fellow hacker community. I am at the crossroads of my career. I started my Comp Sci grad career in software development for a Unix / networking consultancy until where I learnt networking and software development ‘in the trenches’ with Perl and C. Later I moved into enterprise systems doing Java EE (J2EE) and .Net. After completing my MBA I started a generalist business consulting career where I have spent the last six years with a large global consulting firm. I have done a ton of work in financial services where my software background has enabled me to run miles around other consultants because of my ability to juggle numbers at scale. I am now about three-four years to partner in the firm and they have just reconfirmed their unequivocal backing to get me there. $ is good but work hours are long and often involves a lot of travel. I miss working in tech and was wondering if anyone else has done the same jump back into the tech industry from a generalist consulting role? I miss having fellow geeks as my peers, I miss tinkering with technical problems and the pace of change. However I also know I am too ‘senior’ for going back into a developer role. Becoming some sort of architect would be ok, but the 9-5pm cooperate environment hours gives me the shivers. I still want to be able to feel the ‘rush’ of business development. So perhaps a start up tech role might be more appropriate. Seniority or not, I can still be hands on and love cutting code and debugging tech problems. Any ideas or suggestions on possible career moves? FYI - I am Sydney based and also looking for international opportunities into Singapore, Hong Kong and other major cities.

Ask HN: Can anyone explain how DWave was able to scale to 1,800 qubits?

I have a bunch of questions about the recent Nature article and about the underlying simulation itself. 1) how are the individual qubits arranged/"built" 2) what is specifically meant by the topological phenomenon observed, and how does this relate to the quantum simulator accurately predicting what the classical model said what occur? 3) what is the interplay between "performing a computation" and running a quantum simulator? not really seeing the immediate connection there 4) last, not sure how far DWave had come previously to achieving such a large-scale computation with this approach, but it does seem like a pretty huge number of interacting qubits compared to other highly-entangled systems Thanks Link to Nature article in question: https://ift.tt/2OSeXSs

I type at 130 WPM with QWERTY. Two questions: 1. For those who have done it, how long does it take to learn a new keyboard layout (e.g. DVORAK, others) and exceed your previous speed. 2. Is switching back and forth easy to do (like speaking two languages fluently)?

Ask HN: Is there really a need for this, or are we drinking the wrong kool-aid

My question is simple: why are we robbing academics and research of PhDs? There is a thread that's actively encouraging that people should get PhDs (which is fine), but then the take-away for most commenters is that you're going to get a PhD and go into industry, not research or academics. Maybe I am an old fool, and like to romanticize things, but I cannot believe that we encourage people to become masters in a field or subfield, and then go and write marketing algorithms for Google. Having a PhD should not be a requirement for MOST jobs in AI or ML or whatever. Most jobs are bordering on CRUD, and those that need some kind of thinking can be done by someone who has a 'lowly' masters degree. I see this trend happening for three reasons: 1) To reduce competition in job applications; employers are inundated with thousands of resumes for one job. 2) Most employers are copying FAANG, pretending that their business problems require PhDs to solve them. 3) We have lost our understanding of what having a PhD means, i.e. for a college student who wants to decide between two paths, industry or academics, there is no difference anymore. That seems like a very dangerous trend to me because 1) we're wasting workers who could be productive and have no intention of being academics or teachers on PhDs, and 2) we're wasting PhDs on people who have no intention of staying in academics, research or teaching. Not saying that PhDs have a limited supply, but PhD programs certainly have limited slots. Industry cannot be like academia because most employers do not have the time or resources to indulge years and years on research, and making sure that the problems that solved are truly sound, and not just sound enough to ship it. This kind of lazy academics in industry almost seems damaging and counterproductive to any field it touches. Maybe I am wrong about this whole deal, and so I ask.

Ask HN: How to grow skills-wise (eg, dist sys experience) when in a small pond?
2 by sosilkj | 0 comments on Hacker News.
It's becoming clear to me that I"m "growing out of" my current role. I work on a small IT team (within a medium-sized IT department) and the work is/was interesting but I've hit the ceiling in terms of technical challenges, and there is somewhat of a culture of micromanagement in the department (e.g., engineers clock their time against specific "tasks"), further hampering the ability try different/new things. We have a few systems that 'talk' to each other but as far as things like message brokers, partitioned data stores, etc., such things are beyond the scope of what I work on today. I've been reading here on HN about "systems design" interviews, etc. Seems like a catch-22: I know that many employers nowadays will ask systems design questions as part of an interview, but I'm not sure how to present myself as technically competent in that area. How could I leverage my current role to bolster my skills? Or, If I had to do take on a side project in my spare time (not ideal but if that's what's needed, then OK), what would you suggest?

Many years ago I made a website and posted it here. It because a hit and I am proud of it. It's open source under a share-alike non-commercial license. Someone took it, bought the same domain with a different extension and slammed ads on it. This has been going on for many years and I never knew what to do, we are talking pennies and it's not something I would like to get in to legal stuff to fix. I don't have neither the time or money. But if someone knew a way I could at least have this person remove the ads it would be great. Thanks! Edit: could I maybe complain to the domain hosting? I would go to the advertisers but really it's mostly just referral links bitcoin exchanges.
